Theatrical Skills and Techniques
Students learn foundational theatre skills and apply them through scene work, improvisation, and related assignments.
Many activities emphasize collaboration and challenge students to think from multiple perspectives. The program introduces a range of acting techniques, from physical approaches to more cerebral methods, and includes guided discussions that help students discover what resonates with them as performers and what they find both exciting and challenging to explore.
Building Community and Confidence
Our theatre program is centered on building a tight-knit ensemble where collaboration is essential. Students practice active listening as they explore ideas and solve problems together in real time. They are encouraged to improvise and make bold choices, building confidence and a strong sense of self. Each student’s unique perspective and voice are valued, and learning is enriched as students consider and learn from the experiences of others.
Strengthening Academics Through Theater
Learning comes to life through story, text, and history. Students read plays aloud in class, taking turns with different roles to work on their reading skills and comprehension through questioning as well as intuition/prediction of what may occur. They have the opportunity to write structured scenes with others. Additionally, as we assess theatre history and specific plays, we must consider the perspective of the time in history it was written/performed. This provokes connectivity between theming and social climate of different eras.
Performances and Showcases
Students gain opportunities for monologues and scene work in class, along with two full mainstage productions to audition for each year, a play and a musical. The program also collaborates with groups from other schools and selects scenes and solos for arts showcases. Students may participate backstage or on crew for each production and work with a brand-new lighting system for special events and showcases.
